Job Methods Improvement— with a Toyota twist

This course takes the original TWI Job Methods Improvement course and incorporates techniques used by Toyota to design the most efficient work places in the world. This course formed a foundation for Toyota to develop a continuous improvement mind-set, and Toyota advanced the material to create their standardized work process. Your employees will learn how to understand their work in a new way and will use the 4-Step-Plus-One method of analyzing the work and applying their ideas for improving the process. Students will learn the basics of breaking down a job and will apply the fundamentals of standardized work to increase the value-adding work and decrease waste. Students will study the current state, learn to analyze the work and identify opportunities for improvement, implement improvements and create a more productive future state. At the end of this course students will present the results of their efforts to the management team.

Class Structure

Job Instruction and Job Methods courses are conducted on-site in your facility with the actual work place as the learning application area. Using actual work situations is the best way to learn and to apply what has been learned. The Job Relations course can be conducted either on-site or off. It does not involve the actual work place, but attendees should be prepared to discuss actual issues from the work place.

We are often asked which course should be taught first. We find that Job Relations is a good first choice as the course will tend to reduce barriers in the work-place and prepare leaders for interactions with employees and help them to be involved. The Job Instruction and Job Methods classes actually compliment each other and both are equally necessary. It is difficult to teach a job that is not defined and standardized. In Job Methods the work is analyzed, and improved and the resulting change is documented and standardized. The Job Instruction course teaches students to break down jobs into greater detail and specify the critical portion of the work to be taught.

The ultimate aim of the Job Methods effort and standardized work is to define work that is teachable, and the Job Instruction method breaks down work in a way that helps to define a more effective method. The two courses go hand-in-hand. We generally suggest the Job Methods Improvement course before Job Instruction, but learning both methods is necessary for all leaders.
